All three kids were home for awhile, and we spent a lot of time together, but their schedules were so different that we never managed a family vacation. It gets harder with every passing year. Thank goodness for the holidays.<br /><br />We did manage a trip to King's Canyon and Sequoia National Parks with our youngest son and his friend. We were treated to sights of gigantic trees, cascading waterfalls and rushing rapids. We encountered no end of wildlife, including: quail, roadrunners, deer and (due to the strict usage of bear lockers at the campground) the skinniest squirrels I've ever seen. Oddly enough, we heard more French, German and Italian spoken at the touristy places than we did English.<br /><br />We closed out the summer with a milestone. My husband Bruce and I celebrated 25 years of marriage on September 8th. It was a chance to look back and marvel at the wonderful life we've had together, including the many blessings we've shared. <br /><br />Here's wishing you had a healthy and fulfilling summer and that autumn will be even better!Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-27707084178385094052009-05-01T11:02:00.000-07:002009-05-01T12:28:58.922-07:00Happy May Day!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJaQn7upAxe3At6JZXhr9NVHC2xG5xnE-s103OROQEOwaBv-CnYjoDE4Aby6wsa1f_2LDpEBf5Fd-ek1EgI0JExfo_mAxzncQiWLVdqndU5Cd8xgfjCLvVpVUNIUm9VB46iOeMTOc1ges/s1600-h/IMG_5449.JPG"><img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiJaQn7upAxe3At6JZXhr9NVHC2xG5xnE-s103OROQEOwaBv-CnYjoDE4Aby6wsa1f_2LDpEBf5Fd-ek1EgI0JExfo_mAxzncQiWLVdqndU5Cd8xgfjCLvVpVUNIUm9VB46iOeMTOc1ges/s320/IMG_5449.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5330939683618118882" /></a><br />It's a lovely spring day today, the kind of day that fills one with hope and the feeling that anything is possible. <br /><br />With all the negative news that surrounds us in the world today, I hope you will take a moment to consider the blessings you have. Some of my best memories are of times when we didn't have to be anywhere or rush to do something. Those long, lazy days of summer when I could just settle down with a good book or sit outside and enjoy the smell of fresh cut grass or feel the warmth of the sun on my face. We need to learn how to do that again.<br /><br />We rush around so much these days, taking the kids to ballet or baseball, to clarinet lessons or soccer practice. There is so little time left just to relax and enjoy this beautiful planet, to watch a sunrise or see the sunset, to observe a colony of ants hard at work or to follow a butterfly as it flits around the garden.<br /><br />We need to turn off the TV and get out of the house, stop playing the computer games and go for a bike ride. Life is too short to spend it sitting in front of a screen, asking someone else to entertain us.Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-19424270252009085012009-04-08T15:57:00.000-07:002009-04-08T16:43:38.091-07:00Literary Orange<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB9l5JQcvLijRcwj5Mpv_rpfGKGWzk7jDHYPpeDtxC7qMJoD8wmCnDnb0f7DRTh3GMjOtuFs1tagl2_YVkx-ei047WWMTL8LB8U32YM6uX8_6-uXFyLrIQcU2II6YRq0loWY4uWEzyi9w/s1600-h/LiteraryOrange.jpg"><img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 200px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjB9l5JQcvLijRcwj5Mpv_rpfGKGWzk7jDHYPpeDtxC7qMJoD8wmCnDnb0f7DRTh3GMjOtuFs1tagl2_YVkx-ei047WWMTL8LB8U32YM6uX8_6-uXFyLrIQcU2II6YRq0loWY4uWEzyi9w/s200/LiteraryOrange.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5322470001214725618" /></a><br />I had a wonderful opportunity this past Saturday to meet several talented and successful authors at an event called Literary Orange. It was sponsored by the Orange County Public Libraries and the UC Irvine Libraries.<br /><br />I listened to presentations by three great keynote speakers and attended Q & A panels that featured some wonderful writers. They were very honest about their experiences and shared their thoughts about the writing life with those of us lucky enough to attend.<br /><br />Writing is a difficult profession filled with unique challenges, but most of these authors admitted that, even though it isn't always easy, they feel compelled to write. It's part of who they are; it's their calling. Their need to share their stories with the rest of us takes precedence over everything else.<br /><br />If you would like to participate in Literary Orange next year, mark your calendar for April 10, 2010. Even though the weather's a bit dreary in So. Cal. today, the birds know it's spring. They are chirping away like mad, eager to celebrate new beginnings, as the flowers come back to life and cherry blossoms abound.<br /><br />Spring is my favorite time of the year. The weather is mild, but there could still be a rain storm or a heat wave around the corner. I like not knowing which extreme (if either) we'll get. I love the sense of hope and promise that comes with spring. <br /><br />It's a good time to try new things, to set out on an adventure. The possibilities are endless. So this year, why not try something new? Learn a language or take up a new hobby. Paint a picture, plant an herb garden, learn how to play the piano. <br /><br />Go ahead. Try something new. He was one of 13 children, so we have numerous relatives in Ireland, as well as England, Australia and even Malaysia. I have about 75 first cousins on his side of the family alone.<br /><br />St. Patrick's Day has always been one of my favorite holidays. Oddly enough, my dad had never heard of corned beef and cabbage as a traditional St. Paddy's Day meal until he came to the states.<br /><br />When my kids were little, we had fun with the holiday, dying their apple juice green and serving other "green" foods. We also made Leprechaun traps the day before and left them out, only to find little footprints leading away from the trap. Somehow, they always escaped, but they often left a gold coin or two behind.<br /><br />What fun we had with a bottle of green food color and an old shoebox and some string. Everything is picked up and resting in its proper place, easy to get to when you need it. There are open spaces on the floor, clean countertops, neat bookshelves. You have a sense of serenity when you look around your home, satisfied that all is well.<br /><br />Now think about how you feel when the house is a mess, clutter everywhere, the papers you need to find right now are in one of many giant stacks of paper lying around, instead of neatly filed away in the cabinet. Your pulse quickens as your stress level rises. It's hard to focus on what you need to get done, because all around you are reminders of the mess you're in. <br /><br />Yesterday I made a conscious effort to clean away the clutter from my bedroom. I figured I couldn't fault my son for keeping a sloppy room when mine looked no better than his. I pushed myself to keep going, breaking the task up into small segments of time, focusing on one area at a time. At last, it was done, and I felt a tremendous sense of contentment wash over me. Now everytime I walk into that room I am happy, calm, peaceful. <br /><br />Try it!Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-15018109716585631602009-03-05T09:32:00.000-08:002009-03-05T09:43:11.038-08:00Top 100 Healthy Mom Blogs<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbzwcAyqY6pxXMYBia4VFF6aeZT5hxNIX_o3dK7zl7mDi6JVAC5OqL2BcvIfgtnB9WnTwmpxGtMlzvLDv6aVGhgIG-qcV7VBwio0lkFUwvBRMJxwKAp6hHhV9zcpeUr-6ENnXwFq5gNdM/s1600-h/Waterfall.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5309758707925078930" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbzwcAyqY6pxXMYBia4VFF6aeZT5hxNIX_o3dK7zl7mDi6JVAC5OqL2BcvIfgtnB9WnTwmpxGtMlzvLDv6aVGhgIG-qcV7VBwio0lkFUwvBRMJxwKAp6hHhV9zcpeUr-6ENnXwFq5gNdM/s200/Waterfall.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>I just found out that my blog is mentioned in the following article, <a href="http://www.rncentral.com/nursing-library/careplans/top_100_healthy_mom_blogs">Top 100 Healthy Mom Blogs</a>. Here are some tips for reducing stress during these difficult times.<br /><br />1) <strong>Limit your exposure to news</strong> - While it's important to stay informed, you will go crazy with stress and worry if you tune into the news multiple times during the day. Get the headlines and get on with your life.<br /><br />2) <strong>Take what is said with a grain of salt</strong> - Remember that the line between the news and entertainment divisions has blurred in recent years. Ratings rule the day and the more "dramatic" the news, the more the ratings increase. Don't believe everything you hear. Be an informed viewer and draw your own conclusions from the verifiable facts presented.<br /><br />3) <strong>Be grateful for the good things in your life</strong> - Do you have good health? A happy family? Great friends? Make a list of all the things you are grateful for and you will feel a tremendous sense of contentment.<br /><br />4) <strong>Focus on others</strong> - No matter how bad things get, someone always has it worse than you do. We when focus on others and how we can make their burdens lighter, it makes our lives better too.<br /><p>5) <strong>Appreciate the little things</strong> - A pretty flower, the deep blue of the ocean, a baby giggling, a beautiful sunset. All these things make you feel better and ease your worries; maybe it's just for a moment, but all these moments add up to an improved sense of well-being.</p>6) <strong>Get out and move around</strong> - Exercise is a wonderful remedy for stress. It helps to release any pent up nerves or anxiety and it's good for your overall health too. It's a definite win-win!Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-56436148342611988812009-02-19T16:58:00.000-08:002009-02-19T17:09:12.770-08:00Together Time<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq3JAfOvFfIkLNjMLnbyJzoYIbBFOY3UKeS3P7o9AxxSOfSaYWUaGqnVu3DXHe-z8JypTHKaV65KNmNxfFLWvwNySmbOuOaSiwN9SQWkQYmE-oGUDpEqh9-M0HvRC7JCtrP4dcxj1gO3Q/s1600-h/IMG_5193.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5304680351933170162" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiq3JAfOvFfIkLNjMLnbyJzoYIbBFOY3UKeS3P7o9AxxSOfSaYWUaGqnVu3DXHe-z8JypTHKaV65KNmNxfFLWvwNySmbOuOaSiwN9SQWkQYmE-oGUDpEqh9-M0HvRC7JCtrP4dcxj1gO3Q/s200/IMG_5193.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div>As our kids grow and become more independent, it becomes harder and harder to spend time together as a family. Did you make any progress toward your goals? If not, what kept you from moving ahead? Did you lapse back into the same old bad habits? What can you do differently to avoid falling into that trap again?</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I did pretty well this week. I made a plan for writing a certain amount of time each day and I stuck to it. I promised myself that I would not use my writing time for laundry, dishes, cleaning or any of the other distractions I face working at home. I fell short in a couple of places too, mainly because I had a vague objective with no plan to achieve it. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>For example, I want to master this social networking thing. I have pages on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, Live Journal, CafeMom, etc. I signed up for these to promote my writing, but I find I am overwhelmed by the thought of dealing with so many websites and constantly updating each. So this week I will visit each site and evaluate which sites are worth keeping and which to chuck. Then next week, I will post a blog or comment on each site I decide to keep. I will set aside a specific time each day to do this and I will succeed. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>This week try setting a specific task for yourself and make a plan to accomplish that task. Write it down - committing something to paper can be powerful - and check your plan each day to see how you are doing. Drop me a line at the end of the week and let me know how you did.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>You can do it! You can eat less, exercise more, argue less, study more, stop procrastinating. You can change your life! Good luck!</div>Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-54914755457576583962009-01-04T18:10:00.000-08:002009-01-04T18:19:25.167-08:00Resolutions!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh27J_qBD8BlQpc5AczUfK0pstFcBXQTTTouUolvg4mEG6279JjbN5Dv_tQnlY640i5xOi5XqAVgWAeOgaK-07GhKvyYpLnUn4UiFnDOgw2EwPnNpYpdH_tV9vseCu5cwFHY1kOfjRdkNQ/s1600-h/274799_playschool_sunshine.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5287628537549307378" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 193px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh27J_qBD8BlQpc5AczUfK0pstFcBXQTTTouUolvg4mEG6279JjbN5Dv_tQnlY640i5xOi5XqAVgWAeOgaK-07GhKvyYpLnUn4UiFnDOgw2EwPnNpYpdH_tV9vseCu5cwFHY1kOfjRdkNQ/s200/274799_playschool_sunshine.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>A few words of encouragement as we begin this new year. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>I hope you have made some New Year's resolutions and I hope they are attainable. If they are realistic, but you are not sure if you will honor them, think about this. The words we use when we think or speak have tremendous power. If we say, "I'll try" or "I will if I can" or "hopefully," the odds are good that we will not succeed. However, if we use the words "I will," "I can," and "I am going to," we have a far greater chance of succeeding.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>So here's to a new year full of possibilities and positive language.</div>Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-59691710423542565272008-12-31T10:52:00.000-08:002008-12-31T11:31:43.719-08:00Happy New Year!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnGV3IFQ11o84UM7JaA0af7uIEvobOcIeQjCqhidttkPnR_4Oo2y2ujroSR_DeTlV7DT4JBNRzN5DvwOMlkfzrYERuopzXTh34IOBAWcKyll_OaRDpj4YghoVSxn2C6RHJAOYH6lqsVl0/s1600-h/champagne.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5286038610815995426" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 66px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 100px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnGV3IFQ11o84UM7JaA0af7uIEvobOcIeQjCqhidttkPnR_4Oo2y2ujroSR_DeTlV7DT4JBNRzN5DvwOMlkfzrYERuopzXTh34IOBAWcKyll_OaRDpj4YghoVSxn2C6RHJAOYH6lqsVl0/s200/champagne.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div>It's New year's Eve and I hope each and every one of you has a safe, fun and memorable celebration. </div><br /><br /><div>Sometimes we make beginning a new year very hard on ourselves. We pledge to make numerous changes in our lives, to lose those extra pounds, to get that promotion, to take that trip we've been planning for years. We swear that this year will be different than the rest, better than before. It doesn't matter that we've made these promises to ourselves for years now; somehow we believe that this year will be different.</div><br /><br /><div>And yet somehow it isn't. Why is that? Because: </div><br /><br /><div>1) <strong>We have too many goals.</strong> Change is hard, so trying to change multiple facets of your life all at once is extremely difficult. Prioritize your goals and work on one or two at a time. The others will keep for another day.</div><br /><br /><div>2) <strong>Our goals are unreasonable.</strong> I don't care how much you love horses, if you are a 6 foot tall, 250lb. man, you are not going to be a jockey. Don't give up on your dreams, simply put aside unattainable goals and work on those you have a real chance of achieving.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>3) <strong>We don't have a plan of action to achieve our goals.</strong> You need to map out a plan for reaching your goals on a day-by-day, week-by-week, month-by-month schedule, with firm dates for reaching your goals and milestones to mark your progress.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>This year I plan to put these three steps into action. This year I will succeed, because I will follow a plan for focusing my energy on accomplishing what I need to do in order to reach my goals.</div><br /><br /><div>May you reach your goals in 2009! Happy New Year!</div>Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-80289107044147772832008-12-17T13:35:00.000-08:002008-12-17T14:26:51.882-08:00Stress-Free Holiday<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHJ08eHpR-8X_bY6qPmMkGJkqz4fzaAlMpUtMJ0Ua7ByChLoi69vXFTCg5CTw59b607Uq1UcAf2y9Pm_nRNgmbv480zuaHa_T1QjFECdeDP_AR7lzPBJUOqR3ONg3bUDxn0UbHitnvUo/s1600-h/IMG_4774.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5280889083594596034" style="FLOAT: right; MARGIN: 0px 0px 10px 10px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoHJ08eHpR-8X_bY6qPmMkGJkqz4fzaAlMpUtMJ0Ua7ByChLoi69vXFTCg5CTw59b607Uq1UcAf2y9Pm_nRNgmbv480zuaHa_T1QjFECdeDP_AR7lzPBJUOqR3ONg3bUDxn0UbHitnvUo/s200/IMG_4774.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div>Okay, okay, there is probably no such thing as a stress-free holiday, simply because we insist on packing so much activity into such a short time. Shopping, baking, cleaning, mailing packages, writing Christmas cards, entertaining, attending parties. Whew! It's enough to make anyone dizzy. So, if we can't elimiate stress entirely, here are five ways to reduce stress during the holidays.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>1) Make a plan. Instead of running around to several different stores, decide what you're shopping for and where best to find it, then head out. Try to stick to one geographical area at a time - the mall on Friday night, the local shopping center on Sat., etc. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>2) Shop during off hours if possible. Take an early lunch one day and get a few things done, or come into work extra early and take off at three. Of course, it helps to have a flexible work schedule and an understanding boss. If you can't swing that, several stores open as early as 7:00 or 8:00 a.m. on weekends and stay open late during the holidays.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>3) If you do get stuck in a long line, take a deep breath. Try to use the time productively. Enjoy the lovely music, think of the fun you're going to have with your kids, reminisce about your favorite Christmas, people watch. You're stuck in line anyway, why be miserable? Same thing goes for the cookies that burn or the gelatin that won't set. Don't sweat the small stuff and lose sight of the important stuff.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div>4) Prioritize. As the holiday draws nearer, you may not be able to get everything on your list done. Decide which items must be done and focus on those. Christmas will still come if you don't get every decoration up or make that extra batch of fudge. </div><br /><div></div><br /><div>5) Remember why we're celebrating. It should be a time of joy, of love, of opening our hearts to those around us. Don't let little things get you down. Enjoy the time we are given to spend with our loved ones. It's priceless.</div><br /><div></div><br /><div></div>Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-47142946245710791042008-11-30T13:50:00.001-08:002008-11-30T14:24:40.318-08:00The Joy of Writing<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK-IZfNALqVrwFhXu22XV1QQrptzvgggiMlhXKdZmTH2E_1_3aZFYBxm47-Iyy_l3_gckkE1_AjDGNysAs1nYRWz8VHZTiNIg3ZD-oBMxM-p5fFa-eausxjDNBBrP2R_ixkUpiQp4mxtE/s1600-h/pen.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274579083073489954" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 66px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 100px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK-IZfNALqVrwFhXu22XV1QQrptzvgggiMlhXKdZmTH2E_1_3aZFYBxm47-Iyy_l3_gckkE1_AjDGNysAs1nYRWz8VHZTiNIg3ZD-oBMxM-p5fFa-eausxjDNBBrP2R_ixkUpiQp4mxtE/s200/pen.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>As promised, I said I would write about the joy of writing, so I will. </div><br /><div>If you've ever experienced putting words together in a way that perfectly conveys your feelings, then you know the joy of writing.</div><br /><div>If you've ever written something that evokes strong emotions, then you have learned how to use the written word to make a connection with another person.</div><br /><div>If you've ever made an argument on paper that is so persuasive that it forces another to examine his or her views, then you understand the power of the written word.</div><br /><div>If you feel compelled to write even if no one else ever sees your words, simply for the fulfillment it brings to you and you alone, then you are a writer.</div>Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-83101685198163837402008-11-30T13:44:00.000-08:002008-11-30T14:23:15.181-08:00Success!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxHaXw2GiXgOhYZsWcRIsypZtq7GpRxBzTQeMXjhUYLzBXEtSSOrIOt_Q7liTjvy1ry1fo9ZOlhR2GmN8RU3o25_qMHyKFKETwakE0pz8L1cSRNu94h4zzw2Z7j8tdMi-S9J-ITmqECdo/s1600-h/leaning_tower___.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5274579635468255778" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 149px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxHaXw2GiXgOhYZsWcRIsypZtq7GpRxBzTQeMXjhUYLzBXEtSSOrIOt_Q7liTjvy1ry1fo9ZOlhR2GmN8RU3o25_qMHyKFKETwakE0pz8L1cSRNu94h4zzw2Z7j8tdMi-S9J-ITmqECdo/s200/leaning_tower___.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>It's November 30th and I just uploaded my novel to the NaNoWriMo website. That's because I've been busy completing a project that I began last spring. I'm writing a mystery novel. It's something I have always wanted to do, and so I am finally doing it. </div><br /><br /><div>I have a tendency to begin projects and never quite complete them. Some simply must get finished, and somehow I manage to get through them. Others are easier to put off. Writing a novel falls into the latter category for several reasons.</div><br /><br /><div>1) <strong>It's just plain scary.</strong> You're putting something you have created, something that is a part of you out there for the whole world to see - and judge. And they don't call them critics for nothing.</div><br /><br /><div>2) <strong>It's hard.</strong> Let's face it. Writing is hard work. It is all consuming as the characters occupy your mind day and night. You have to sit down in front of a blank page or screen and start writing, even if you haven't got an idea of where you're headed with that scene. You agonize over finding the right word, only to scrap that sentence, paragraph or entire page the next day when you reread your work.</div><br /><br /><div>3) <strong>It takes a long time.</strong> You can't write a novel in a short amount of time. It takes months to plan it out and months to write it and months to rewrite it. Even though I'm writing like the wind for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo), I began thinking about this book a long time ago, and there will be many edits before the final draft is complete.</div><br /><br /><div>4) <strong>It may never be published.</strong> Book publishing is a business and editors won't buy a book unless they believe it will sell many copies. That makes it harder to break into the business, but it doesn't make the effort of writing the book any less worthwhile.</div><br /><br /><div>Next blog - the Joys of Writing a Novel</div><br /><br /><div></div>Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-78541328954678253952008-10-13T10:32:00.000-07:002008-10-13T10:47:11.810-07:00The Power Within<a href="http://www.sxc.hu/pic/m/b/bl/blatje/1004123_sunrise.jpg"><img style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand" alt="" src="http://www.sxc.hu/pic/m/b/bl/blatje/1004123_sunrise.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><div>"What lies behind us, and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. And when we bring what is within us out into the world, miracles happen." - Ralph Waldo Emerson</div><br /><br /><div>What a beautiful quote and how important it is that we believe this and that we teach our children to believe it as well. We all have tremendous strength within us. We learn to cope with grief, loss, illness and disappointment. We pick ourselves up and carry on, ready to face a new day. </div><div><br /> </div><div>In addition to our inherent strength, we are all blessed with unique, individual talents. When we put aside our fears and our embarrassment, we allow our innate gifts to shine forth. Encourage your children to take risks, to reveal their gifts to the world and leave the world a better place for having done so. Have a wonderful day!</div>Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4133566900857642811.post-65660674815776310582008-10-07T13:20:00.000-07:002008-10-07T13:37:52.936-07:00Moving Forward - Things are Different NowWe had a special treat this weekend. Both kids were home from college to help my mom celebrate her 83rd birthday. It seemed like old times with the entire family together, but it was different. Brian could only stay one night; he had to be back on Sat. to work on a group project with some friends. Katie wanted to earn some money babysitting and she needed to get together with a high school buddy. Eric, as usual, was busy with his friends, and spent a big chunk of the weekend playing football. <br /><br />And so, the times have changed. Once your kids grow up and leave home, the dynamics are never quite the same again. They have their own lives and their own set of priorities, just as we did when we were that age. We can either feel sad and mourn the loss of that family togetherness, or we can recognize how very lucky we were to have had those times together and look forward to the future visits we will have. Me? I'm going to do the latter.Theresa Schultzhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13838016075981262051noreply@blogger.com2
